Earthquake Story

An earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay area at 8:12 a.m. Monday morning. The earthquake caused a building on Plum St. collapsed and killed 2 people and injured 6.
The quake had a strong magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale and the epicenter was under the Hayward Hills.
"It was a strong one," scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Penny Gertz said. "It occurred on the Hayward Fault, which runs under the hills."
Residents of the Bay area who were near the building could feel the movement of the ground when the quake hit. Hayward resident Mike Beamer, who lives across the street from the collapsed building felt a rolling motion fro about 30 seconds and a jolt in the middle of it.
"I was eating my breakfast when the room started rolling," Beamer said. "I dove under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and a chunk of cement flew through my kitchen window. That’s when the screaming start across the street.”
Almost immediately after the earthquake hit the building, firefighters, police officers, and American Red Cross workers showed up to the scene. They used ropes to stabilize the building and capped a gas line after detecting a dangerous leak that could've resulted in more problems.
"Twenty-one fire personnel, 12 police and five American Red Cross workers responded to the building collapse, with some arriving within four minutes of the quake," Public information officer Jennifer Vu said.
The earthquake was so strong, people far north and south of the area felt the earhtquake's impact.
"People as far south as Los Angeles and as far north as Redding felt the quake," Gertz said.
