Captain Phillips Movie Review

Captain Phillips: Prepare to be hooked

Based on a real event, "Captain Phillips" is the story of the Maersk Alabama is invaded by four Somalian pirates, played by Barkhad Abdi, Faysal Ahmed, Mahat M. Ali, and Barkhad Abdirahman. Captain Richard Phillips, played by Tom Hanks, notices a small boat of armed pirates. After a strong attempt of trying to get away, the pirates eventually catch up to them. As the pirates climb aboard the cargo ship, the crew hides in the engine room and Captain Phillips tries to make a deal with the pirates in order to keep everyone alive. The pirates turn down the offer and refuse to leave the ship without taking Captain Phillips. The four pirates and captain get in a lifeboat and go towards Somalia. After days of travel in the cramped life boat with little water and food, a U.S. Navy ship arrives and attempts to negotiate with the pirates, in exchange for the captain. This film is a story of how Captain Phillips persisted through the challenges he faced throughout the event.
The cast of "Captain Phillips" play their roles so well, they make you feel like you are on board the Maersk Alabama with them when the ship was invaded. The entire cast delivers an emotional performance throughout the whole movie, and will make you feel connected to each and every character. Director, Paul Greengrass uses a choppy and unique style of cinematography that creates drama and suspense. Every element in this film makes it worth watching.
Captain Phillips's plot perfectly portrays the story of the Maersk Alabama hijacking, and easily captures the attention of the audience. The film is very high-concept, and engaging enough for anyone to enjoy it without knowing any background information. Pretty much anyone above the age of 12 would enjoys this film because of the mature scenes and topics. Because of it's suspense and feeling of excitement it gives to the viewer, I would give this movie a 9/10 and recommend that everyone watch it.
